IB Diploma Programme
|
Quantum College was the first school in Armenia that became a member of the IB in 2011 and was authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme. Founded in 1968, nowadays the IB is one of the best educational systems in the world. The first Armenian alumni that studied in the IB system did their best not only studying the 6 subjects of the Diploma Programme but also organized numerous CAS projects. For example, in December 2011 they volunteered for a week for the Junior Eurovision working as guide-translators for the delegation of different countries. This project being very effective for the students, was highly appreciated by the College CAS Programme Assessment Council. This video was made by the students and is a feedback to the project and the opportunities it gave. The online educational TV was one of the CAS projects too. The students developed an educational website where they shared video lectures from different subjects: literature, history, geography, etc. Different tests were given to the students for checking the effectiveness of the online lessons. Within the framework of CAS projects students do such projects as learning a new sport or musical instrument, cooking, helping orphans with their lessons, volunteering in a hospital, planting trees, cleaning some area, etc. These projects allow DP students to be developed as well- rounded personalities with a deep understanding of national and international values, apart from their thorough knowledge in different subjects. In 2013 the hard work of our students and teaching staff gave its results: the 12 IBDP graduates succeeded in their final examinations and entered different universities worldwide. The average examination result of our students exceeded the world average in about 5 points. The students studied both the Armenian and the IB school programs which gave them an opportunity to get an Armenian state graduation certificate alongside with the IB diploma. The IBDP surely was a great success at Quantum College opening new educational perspectives for those who intend to get a higher education abroad.
The IB DP at Quantum College includes 5 subject groups as well as the 3 components of the DP core: the Extended Essay (EE), the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS). You can see the subjects offered by Quantum College in the picture below (please note that the 6th subject group, the Arts, should be replaced by one more subject chosen from groups 1 to 5). Three of the subjects are studied at a higher level (240 teaching hours) and the other three at a standard level (150 teaching hours). The 3 components of the core are also essential to the IB philosophy. The Extended Essay has a word limit of 4000. It gives the students an opportunity to do a deep research in a specific field of study according to their personal interests. It’s a unique chance to get accustomed to the writing skills required at universities. The Theory of Knowledge studies the nature of knowledge across different disciplines, encourages critical thinking. CAS involves students in arts, sport and social activities. |
